Walk Against Hunger,Saturday, April 11, 2009
Thousands of Philadelphians suffer with food insecurity and hunger. Food insecurity occurs whenever the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways, is limited or uncertain. Hunger is defined as the uneasy or painful sensation caused by a recurrent or involuntary lack of food
Both food insecurity and hunger can result in many physical and mental health problems. Regardless of income people who do not have access to enough safe and nutritious food can suffer from fatigue, headaches, irritability, inability to concentrate and frequent colds. Paradoxically, food insecurity can result in obesity as people eat lower-cost, high-calorie foods to stave off hunger, or over-eat when food is available
What You Can Do:
Attend the panel on Hunger as a Public Health Issue on Wednesday, April 8th, 10am-12pm (15th & Race, New College Bldg, first floor, Geary B)
Carey Morgan, Greater Philadelphia Coalition against Hunger
Bill Clark, Philabunadance
Representative from SHARE
Mariana Chilton, School of Public Health
Diane Loucks, Mayor's Office
Join the Hunger Walk on Saturday, April 11th- register at http://www.hungerwalk.org/ or call 215-430-0555
Advocate to keep the Universal Feeding Program in Philadelphia's public schools. New restrictions announced by the USDA would require families to submit an Application for Meal Benefits in order to establish eligibility to receive free and/or reduced price breakfast and lunch
